Criminal mayor refuses to resign

Council asks him to step down in wake of guilty pleas for assaults

Port Coquitlam, BC - Canada

Embattled Port Coquitlam Mayor Scott Young is refusing to step down.

A defiant Young last night chaired his first council meeting since pleading guilty last week to assaulting his former girlfriend and her boyfriend.

Members of the media and city staff outnumbered the handful of citizens at the meeting, many of whom were there on business unrelated to the Young controversy.

A late addition to theScott Young Port Coquitlam BC agenda was a motion by all six councillors calling for Young’s resignation — the third time the councillors have unanimously called for Young to quit.

The resolution was not debated and passed 6-1, with Young’s vote the lone dissent.

Only two people took advantage of open question period to press Young over his decision to stay on.

When one of them asked Young to step down, he declined, Coun. Greg Moore told The Province.

“When he was asked to expand on that, [Young] said, ‘No, I won’t,’” said Moore.

The motion read in part: “Not calling for Scott Young’s resignation would be perceived as endorsing the notion that alcoholism is an excuse for violence.

“Now that Scott Young has admitted guilt, the city councillors are once again requesting that the mayor resign.”

The dapper mayor seemed businesslike as the meeting began, speaking in a strong voice.

“Council twice asked for [Young’s] resignation last year and he has decided to stay,” Moore said in an interview before the meeting. “It makes council a little more difficult these days than it was before.”

Moore said some voters had told him that they were prepared to wait for the outcome of the court proceedings against Young, 46, who suffered personal tragedy when his teenage daughter committed suicide in 2002.

On April 4, 2007, Young went to the home of his former girlfriend Colleen Preston in defiance of a restraining order.

He pleaded guilty in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court last week to assaulting Preston and her friend Glen Shaw, and one count of breaching the restraining order.

Young burst into Preston’s home gym and began attacking Shaw, lying on the floor.Scott Young Mayor Port Coquitlam BC

He kicked Shaw in the ribs and elbow and punched him in the head. The two grappled, and Young managed to slap Preston’s face. Preston called 911 shortly thereafter.

Officers had to use force to restrain Young, who was extremely intoxicated.

When an officer searched Young, he found four-metre lengths of yellow plastic rope in each front pocket — the same kind of rope his 14-year-old daughter Sierra used to commit suicide by hanging herself. The judge is expected to impose his sentence June 17.

According to security records, Young visited his city hall office three times after hours on April 4, 2007, the last time between 10:56 and 11:06 p.m. that night, when he cleaned out his personal effects.

At about 11:40 p.m., Young went to the home of his former girlfriend, Colleen Preston, who was working out with her new boyfriend, Glen Shaw, in her home gym.

Young “whipped open” the door and immediately went towards Shaw, who had been laying on the floor doing crunches. The mayor kicked Shaw in the ribs several times, at one point coming close to hitting Shaw’s head.

When Shaw got up, Young punched him in the head a number of times and the two continued to struggle.

At one point, Young broke free of Shaw’s grip and slapped Preston across the face.

She called 911 and a portion of her call to 911 was played in court Wednesday.

On the tape, Preston is heard alternately screaming at the 911 operator to send police and yelling at Young, saying, “You shouldn’t be here” and “There’s a restraining order against you.”

In the background, the ongoing tussle between Young and Shaw is somewhat audible, with Young yelling at Preston, “You f—ing ruined my life” and “You killed me. I’m f—ing dead. I don’t care.”

When Coquitlam RCMP arrived at 11:47 p.m., they found Shaw holding Young on the ground.

The officers noted a strong smell of alcohol on Young’s breath and said they had to use force in arresting him after he tried to resist by rolling over to sit up.

In Preston’s statement to police after the incident, she said Young seemed “crazed” and like he was in a drug-fuelled rage.

“But one of the most disturbing aspects was the discovery of ropes in Mr. Young’s pockets,” Duncan said. (In fall 2002, Young’s 14-year-old daughter from his first marriage took her own life by hanging herself.)

Duncan said that Young appeared to have been in a state of serious depression and intoxication as well as distress over the failure of his relationship with Preston. The “ominous overtones” of the two pieces of 14-foot-long nylon rope in his pockets was a further aggravating factor.

UFO video to be shown Friday

A video that purportedly shows a living, breathing space alien will be shown to the news media Friday in Denver.

Jeff Peckman, who is pushing a ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver to prepare the city for close encounters of the alien kind, said the video is authentic and convinced him that aliens exist.

“As impressive as it is, it’s still one tiny portion in the context of a vast amount of peripheral evidence,” he said Wednesday. “It’s really the final visual confirmation of what you already know to be true having seen all the other evidence.”

When Peckman went before city officials this month to discuss his proposed ET initiative, he promised to show the video.

Peckman said the general public will have to wait to see it because it’s being included in a documentary by Stan Romanek.

“No one will be allowed to film the segment with the extraterrestrial because there is an agreement in place limiting that kind of exposure during negotiations for the documentary,” he said.

But people won’t have to wait too long to see it for themselves.

“There is an open, public meeting in about a month in Colorado Springs,” Peckman said. “We’ll hope to do one in Denver at some point, and then in a few months, there will be the documentary that anybody can have, and it’ll have the footage.”

An instructor at the Colorado Film School in Denver scrutinized the video “very carefully” and determined it was authentic, Peckman said.

Peckman, 54, said the video was among the reasons he was “compelled” to launch the proposed ballot initiative, which has generated news as far as South Africa.

“It shows an extraterrestrial’s head popping up outside of a window at night, looking in the window, that’s visible through an infrared camera,” he said. The alien is about 4 feet tall and can be seen blinking, Peckman said earlier this month.

In a statement, Peckman said “other related credible evidence” proving aliens exist will be shown at Friday’s news conference, too.

In 2003, Peckman authored an off-beat ballot initiative that would have required the city to implement stress-reduction techniques. The “Safety Through Peace” initiative failed, but garnered 32 percent of the vote.

OpenOffice 3 enters beta stage, Embraces Microsoft File Formats and Adds Mac Support

The first beta-test version of the OpenOffice.org 3.0 productivity suite was released on Wednesday, adding significant features such as improved Mac OS X support and support for the OpenDocument 1.2 standard.

Version 3.0 will be the first to run on Mac OS X using the standard Aqua user interface, rather than relying on the Unix windowing software X11, and will add partial support for Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) on Mac OS X, according to Sun, which is one of the driving forces behind OpenOffice.

The suite will be able to read files created with the Mac-specific version of Microsoft Office 2007 and 2008, and will also support existing read-write functions for other types of Microsoft Office formats. Improvements to the Writer component include the ability to display multiple pages while editing and improvements to the notes feature, Sun said. The Calc and Chart components also have new features.

The software is available for public download in US English on Windows, Linux, OS X and Solaris, but Sun warned that it is not considered suitable for production use.

OpenOffice 3 Beta

The last final OpenOffice release was version 2.4 in March. The final version of version 3.0 is scheduled for September, according to Sun.

Windows/Mac/Linux (all platforms): OpenOffice.org, the free office application suite, has released a beta of its 3.0 version to the public with a few key features rolled in. The biggest update is native support for Mac OS X platforms, meaning no need to install X11 packages on older Macs or switch to NeoOffice for a smoother experience (although NeoOffice plans to release a 3.0 of its own, so stay tuned). OpenOffice also adds built-in conversion filters for Office 2007/Mac Office 2008 files, a new “solver” function for spreadsheets, enhanced notes and viewing options in Writer, and other enticements for those willing to risk a few bugs. OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems.

OpenOffice.org, the free, open source alternative to Microsoft Office has released a beta preview of version 3.0. Among the changes in the new version are support for the Open Document Format v1.2, Microsoft Office 2007 import filters and native support for Mac OS X users.

The new OS X version eliminates the need to run OpenOffice through the X11 environment. Sun, which oversees OpenOffice, announced some time ago that native OS X support was high on its priority list and Mac users should be happy to hear the company is delivering on that promise.

Unfortunately the new OS X version was noticeably slower than NeoOffice, a Mac-specific OpenOffice offshoot, and most of the extensions I tried to install wouldn’t work. OpenOffice still has a way to go before it’s ready for everyday use on a Mac. For the time being NeoOffice remains the better choice for Mac OS X users, but at least OpenOffice is available now.

The other big news in this release is that OpenOffice can now handle the OOXML format — Microsoft’s default document format for Office 2007 and Office 2008 for Mac OS X — making it a viable choice for those that need OOXML document support.

Other changes include a “Start Center”, some new, more legible icons, and a zoom control in the status bar. On the whole the beta doesn’t look much different than previous versions, but each of OpenOffice’s apps have received some welcome new changes features like improved PDF creation throughout and a much better Notes tool in Writer, the OpenOffice word processor.

The Chart tool has been revamped as well with some slick new graphical options and OpenOffice also now supports VBA macros. Although the VBA support is still somewhat limited, it’s a step in the right direction for those that rely on VBA scripting to handle complex spreadsheet operations and more.

For those of you wondering why you need a full-fledged office suite when online alternatives like Google Docs or Zoho offer many of the same features, be sure to check out the OpenOffice.org2GoogleDocs extension which gives you the best of both worlds, syncing your OpenOffice docs with your online docs (note that the extension failed to install using the OS X version, YMMV).

As always OpenOffice.org is a free download and can be grabbed from the official site. Keep in mind that this is a beta release and the usual warnings apply.
