Open Question: About gear Linkage Cable…?

I have a 1991 Ford Crown Victoria. At least that is what I believe the year to be. In the last couple months I have trouble with the gear indicator being in the wrong gear slot. Just last month I lost all gear capabilities. The car is stuck in Park and the car still runs great but, I have no way to drive it. A friend/coworker says the same thing happened to her and she was able to buy the cable for about $50 and had a local shop fix it for around $90. Is this something that is cheap and easy to fix, or is this gonna cost me a pretty penny. The car is in great condition and I really like it, but, if it's gonna be a pricey fix, I will have to get rid of the car. I am far from being made of money - LOL ~Dann~
